Jo Mora Biography

 

Jo Mora’s “Horsemen of the West” Series - Arizona Highways Magazine – September 1952,
Pg. 16-25 – This issue features eight color images, and one in Black & White, of a series of 12 original watercolors originally created by Jo Mora in the early 1900s for Scribner’s Magazine.

Men, Myths and Rituals by Maggie Wilson – Arizona Highways Magazine – September 1979, Pg.3-9 – This issue is basically the short version of the publication The Year of the Hopi that follows, which features some of Jo Mora’s famous Kachina watercolors and black & White photographs, along with the story of his experiences living among the Hopi and Navajo tribes between 1904-1906.

The Day the Katsinas Came Home by Edwin L. Wade - Canon Journal – Premiere Issue – Spring 1995, Pg. 16-31 – This is the very first issue of this new magazine and it features yet another comprehensive story about Jo Mora’s time in Hopi land between 1904-1906.

Yosemite Reveals the Artistry and Humor of Jo Mora by Peter Hiller – Yosemite Association Journal – Winter 2008, Vol. 70, number 1; Cover + Pg. 3-5 – This is the most recent work written and published about Jo Mora. The article discusses Jo’s experiences when he went through Yosemite Park in 1904, heading to Hopi land where he stayed till 1906, and how it lead to the creation of his whimsical Yosemite carte (map).
